experiment on this

so Lab starts on tuesday night and i’m pretty eager to get back to the studio and pick up where we left off from our workshops last december. this Lab i will be coming back to some pure movement focussed ideas that explore dynamic bursts of energy that may result in the spectucular and scary. i will also look at mischief and electric intimacy that people in tight relationships share. and i’m sure we’ll find heaps more to inspire us along the way. also taking a workshop each will be emerging choreographers and Stompin Alumni, Emma Porteous and Adam Wheeler - can’t wait dudes! see you in Lab: workshops start Tuesday 7 March 5pm-8pm

tuesday Lab (no.1) dancers: lily, dylan, alice, georgie, emily, bodhi, roisin, ali, grace

cool start to Lab tonight. we looked at things that trigger feelings of fear, to generate risky movement and situations: phobias relating to people and space and movement that freaks us out. mine is anything upsidedown (i’m attending inversion therapy)

thursday Lab. dancers: hayley, holly, dylan and alison

we began with texta lines drawings - abstract to literal mapping of our days - the places we went and the people we interacted with - peaks, troughs, inclines, spikes, squiggles… we then made 2-dimensional travelling phrases of movement, isolated body parts madly drawing texta lines and chasing, nudging and attacking other dancers in our pathways.

followed this by exploring the physicalsiation of movement by bmx’ers doing tricks (minus the bike) - this is in reference to my upcoming work on Skid180 with Arena and Contact Theatres in Manchester in April - a play about 4 street bmx riders who ride right to the edge of things. check out the link to Arena in Things We Like! and stay tuned…

    Cool.

Maps tracking with BMX attack! I like it!

I also got to watch a very sunny, warm, peaceful yoga warm-up Luke led with hayley, holly, alison and dylan.

It’s a big stretch from a downward dog to the spike of a BMX stunt - totally our style!

followed on with texta line drawings to inspire movement. this time taking it into 3 dimensional and whole body movements to travel in one direction, trying to cover a lot of ground. i like beginning with specific things to inspire movement creation such as these line drawings, last year i was using text to inspire it - words and writings from the dancers that come from specific questions, etc. i like simple inspiration that has some potential layers of things to interpret as we move and watch movement. something that we generate through several stages of creative tasks.

followed Lab by heading to MSFest (big music fest for MS benefit in L’ton) awesome time. highlights were: True Live > The Heard > John Course. i’m a big Boogs fan but i thought he was programmed to early (2pm) for his style and would have been a perfect wrap to the night, where New Breed were just to cheesy for a final ho-down. thanks to the nice crew i got to cause mischief with.

got a whole bunch of junk from the bin outside back of Harvey Norman - disgarded packaging materials for furniture and electrical household stuff. we used catalogues to recreate the pictures displaying the items in their glory, using the rubbish they were previously encased in. we then played with the movement and choreography of the construction: the fold of cardboard boxes, the crumple of plastic bags, the squelch of polystirene. the qualities and theatrics of object movement were the interesting parts, not to mention the lovely catalogue models stepping into the picture frame! definitely an idea for HOME.

Wednesday Lab. dancers: Sam, April, Roisin, Grace, Lily, Vic, Shannon and Sam

choreographer for tonight was Stompin Alumni, Emma Porteus - currently in town working with TasDance. Emma is also collaborating with Adam Wheeler on Stompin’s outback project in Roxby Downs.

it was fantastic to watch as emma took the dancers through a number of choreographic ideas: sharp walking patterns, choreography as cartography and mapping dancers’ bodies and the empty space they leave behind and an organic mass of partners joining the scars they have: lip to back, knee to inner elbow…

lovely stuff em! we’re so luck to have emma and adam back in the studio!

wool. different coloured threads. maps and lines of connections between people and their pathways. intricate patterns sculpting and framing the body. watching movement of the body in conjunction with the spaces they were defining with the threads.

Saturday Lab. dancers: April, Sam, Zac and Bec

wool (again). unravelling form a fixed point. winding back in and getting tangled up. street map style line intersections that becomes a 3D-sci fi map of information relays.

amazing race: we took off around the city, our mission was to get from one side to the other without travelling on major streets. teams used allyways, departments stores, car parks and a school. i’m floating the idea of doing regular races in Launceston: on a weekday during trading hours; specific missions and riddles to figure it out; involve non-agressive flash mobbing style tasks that engage witnessing public; rooftops, underground and office buildings; random prizes; website race alerts; anonymous organisation… any takers?

final Lab - Monday night. dancers: Lily, Jamie, Alice, Shenoa, Roisin, Bridget, April, Emily, Georgie, Zac, Alison and Ali… yikes!

spirals. simple as that. spirals in the movement the body makes (e.g. sweeping and curving limbs and torsoe), the patterns we make (turning around and in on ourselves, patterns in space and on the floor) and sprialling in partnering (duets and trios) the torsion and centralphugal/G-forces that come from high torsion counterbalances, etc. pretty wild, awesome fun… once we got over the fear factor of feeling like we were completely out of control.

thanks for a great Lab all. everyone has been so committed and interested in persuing new ideas in movement and open to experiementing and play with the art we’re making.
