"Stompin made me move and explore my body and stage presence like never before... I was able to act in heaps of shows and it made me realise that when you’re pushed you can do anything".
HISOTRY // DANCER // 2008 -2011
My friend told me she was auditioning and I said ‘can anyone do it?’ and she said ‘yes,’ so I went along that day, and it all spiralled from there.... my first show was Uncover This which sunk its claws in deep. I stayed with the company for four years.
What lessons or memories are stuck in your mind from your days at Stompin?
The biggest lesson I learnt is that everyone has something to contribute, no matter how small. Stompin shows are a collaboration of many people and everyone would have a piece of their choreography in the show. I highly valued this sharing of ideas. I also learnt to just bloody go for it and let your inner whacko out.
What are you doing now?
At the moment my life is performing arts orientated. In 2015 I graduated with a Bachelor of Music from the UTAS Conservatorium. And now I am in Melbourne about to start a Bachelor in Acting at VCA.
If you could tell your past-self anything, what would it be?
“Hi past Ava, I’m your future, you’re doing really well, keep doing your thing, make a bit more effort to be more social, and loosen up a little!”.
What excites you about your future? What would you like to be reminded of in ten years?
I am excited about the chance encounters that lead to the great and the not so great things, and excited to see what I will be able to offer the world in the arts or any other field for that matter... I also get really excited thinking about all the people that I will meet in the future. In ten years I want to be reminded of my loving relationships. Reminded to always keep self-improving, always carry earplugs, look after your knees, and reminded to not become like the people who don’t smile at you on the street.
